DETROIT – An attorney is asking for a new trial date in the case of a Nigerian accused of trying to blow up a Detroit-bound plane, arguing federal prosecutors just recently delivered more evidence.
The deadline to challenge evidence is June 24, and a trial for Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (OO'-mahr fah-ROOK' ahb-DOOL'-moo-TAH'-lahb) is scheduled Oct. 4. Attorney Anthony Chambers asks both be changed.
Chambers says he got new evidence on June 1. Chambers says it's "clear the government has had this information for some time." He didn't describe it.
An email message seeking comment was left with the U.S. attorney's office.
Abdulmutallab is charged with trying to blow up a plane as it approached Detroit from Amsterdam on Christmas Day 2009. Eleven crew members and 279 passengers were aboard.
